If you’re looking for a fresh religious horror that actually delivers, check out Immaculate (released March 22, 2024).
Sydney Sweeney stars as Cecilia, a devout young American nun invited to a remote, picturesque convent in the Italian countryside. What starts as a peaceful new beginning quickly spirals into nightmare when she discovers she’s pregnant — despite being a virgin. The sisters proclaim it a miracle. Cecilia begins to suspect something far more unholy is at work.
Directed by Michael Mohan, this Neon release runs a tight 89 minutes and leans hard into classic convent horror tropes (think The Nun meets Rosemary’s Baby with a dash of Martyrs-level intensity). While it doesn’t reinvent the wheel, it executes the formula with style: eerie atmosphere, effective jumps, grotesque practical effects, and a third act that goes gloriously unhinged.
The real star here is Sydney Sweeney. She carries the entire film on her shoulders, going from quiet vulnerability to raw, screaming survival mode in a career-best horror performance. Critics praised her (72% on Rotten Tomatoes calls it “saved by a divine performance from Sydney Sweeney”), and she absolutely earns every bit of the hype.
If you love faith-based horror, body horror, or just want to see Sweeney absolutely unleash in a bloody, claustrophobic setting, Immaculate is worth your time. Not perfect, but viciously entertaining and unforgettable in its final moments.
