Angela Davis was at Virginia Tech today (no thanks to the university), and the moderators were two people I love and value deeply. One is a brother & mentee (his words) of mine; the other is a teacher and mentor (my words) of mine. I can’t put into words rn how beautiful this was to see. Not because of what was shared — though I appreciated a good deal of what Dr. Davis said, especially given the crowd. It was beautiful because of all that was behind it. The immediate work and push my bro did to make it possible, the organizing and culture-shifting work many of us have been doing for about 3 years on campus, and how much my teacher has inspired that work with the skills and lessons shes offered so many of us. I want to write about these things down the line, inshallah.
I am so proud of and happy for them. Inshallah, the energy is something the student organizers on campus funnel into sustained work. I believe they will, and that means a lot knowing where we were even just last year.
