The Eternal Universe

The proposition that reality had no temporal beginning and will have no end.

The Question

Did existence have an absolute starting point in time, or has reality always existed?

Observation

• Rivers flow.

• Seeds become trees.

• Water evaporates into vapor.

• Wood burns into ash.

In ordinary experience, change appears as a transition from one state to another.

Historical Proposals

Many philosophical and religious traditions extended this continuity to reality as a whole, proposing that the universe was never created and will never cease to exist.

In Classical Greek philosophy, Aristotle argued that time and motion are eternal, making the idea of a “first moment of time” philosophically incoherent.

In several ancient traditions—including Jainism, many Hindu philosophical traditions, and early Western atomism—reality itself was understood as fundamentally uncreated: an infinite whole in which individual forms arise and pass away, while existence itself remains eternal.

The Impact

The idea of an eternal universe reframed humanity's place in existence. Rather than viewing the cosmos as a temporary stage fashioned for a finite narrative, it presented human life as a momentary expression within an infinite, self-sustaining reality.

The Critique

The proposal of an eternal universe introduces significant philosophical and scientific challenges:

• If time extends infinitely into the past, an infinite number of moments must already have elapsed to reach the present—raising the question of whether an actual infinity can be traversed.

• Some critics argue that if the universe were infinitely old and governed by the known laws of thermodynamics throughout its history, usable energy should already have been exhausted. Whether this objection applies depends on the cosmological model being considered.

The Legacy

The question of whether the universe is eternal or had a definite beginning remains central to cosmology and metaphysics. It continues to appear in contemporary discussions of inflationary cosmology, steady-state models, and cyclic universe theories.

Can an infinite past ever be reached?

Part of an ongoing investigation into the ideas that shape human existence.
