The Cyclic Universe

The proposition that reality unfolds through recurring cycles of emergence, dissolution, and renewal.

The Question

Does reality move along a one-way, linear path toward a final end, or does it repeat in recurring cosmic cycles?

Observation

• Day gives way to night, and night returns to day.

• The seasons return year after year.

• Tides rise and fall.

• Living organisms are born, grow, die, and nourish new life.

In ordinary experience, many natural processes follow recurring patterns rather than one-way paths.

Historical Proposals

Many philosophical and religious traditions extended these recurring natural patterns to the cosmos itself, proposing that reality moves through vast cycles of creation, preservation, collapse, and renewal.

In ancient Indian traditions—including Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism—cosmic time was understood through immense recurring ages (such as Yugas and Kalpas), in which the universe undergoes endless cycles of emergence, preservation, dissolution, and rebirth.

In Stoic philosophy, the doctrine of ekpyrosis proposed that the cosmos periodically perishes in a great cosmic fire before being renewed and beginning another cycle.

The Impact

Cyclic worldviews reshaped human attitudes toward time, suffering, and mortality. Instead of viewing history as an irreversible march toward a final end, many societies emphasized harmony with natural rhythms, acceptance of inevitable decline, and renewal through recurring cycles.

The Critique

Cyclic models introduce significant philosophical and scientific challenges.

• If every cycle repeats identically, it becomes difficult to explain whether each cycle is genuinely new or logically identical to the last.

• In physical systems, entropy tends to increase over time. A cyclic universe would therefore require some mechanism by which cosmic order is renewed or entropy is reset.

The Legacy

The cyclic model continues to influence both philosophy and theoretical physics. It appears in Nietzsche's idea of Eternal Recurrence and in cosmological models such as the Big Bounce, oscillating universe hypotheses, and Penrose's Conformal Cyclic Cosmology (CCC).
