Way too many people would prefer thousands of deaths in the abstract of stats over empty cars in the concrete of the streets. It's too easy to let small, immediate empathy overshadow the big, distant kind; a lightbulb is not brigther than the sun just because it's closer. We should be able to shut down the visceral reaction of watching a car drive solo for the sake of not having to read as many obituary sections that look like accident reports.
