Don't underestimate how tiny frictions shape human interaction, they’re a powerful force. If they created a functionality that allowed someone with money to spare to open locked content for everyone, we'd all win in exchange (readers can read it, creator gets paid, Substack gets paid, a person with extra cash gets to do a good deed whose effect on the world is automatically felt). Also, Substack takes the lowest cut of any platform of its kind, we should be grateful they don't take 30%. Also, that cut is their rightful share for creating and maintaining the ecosystem from which you are writing nonsense. It's so easy to criticize everything…
This already exists. It's called sending the writer a DM. Nothing stopping anyone from trying this right now. Even better, if you arrange this with a writer and venmo them the money, the writer gets all the money. If Substack handled it they would want a cut.
