During my childhood, my grandmother would slather me in sunscreen during the summer, put a loose braid in my hair, and send me outside, always saying, “Make a mess,” and “I can’t wait to hear about your adventures.” I picked juicy blackberries, smoky August tomatoes, and zucchini with my grandfather, and read library books in the shade to break from the afternoon sun. When I think about what makes for a rich life, I always return to the simplicity of my grandparents’ home.
