Anime Review: My Dress-Up Darling

Have you ever felt like an outsider or faced judgment because of the things you love? This is the emotional core of My Dress-Up Darling. It’s a story about two people with "niche" passions who find strength in each other’s company.

The Bond of "Weird" Hobbies

The story follows Wakana Gojo, a high schooler dedicated to the traditional art of making Hina dolls. Because this is seen as an unconventional hobby for a young man, Gojo has lived with the scars of bullying and social isolation. Everything changes when he meets Marin Kitagawa.

Marin is a popular girl who secretly loves cosplay but lacks the technical skills to bring her favorite characters to life. When she discovers Gojo’s talent, she doesn't laugh; she’s genuinely fascinated. This sets a powerful example for the audience: we should approach others' passions with respect. Even if you don’t find a hobby "normal" or interesting yourself, if it brings someone joy, it deserves your respect.

Challenging Prejudices

The show also does a fantastic job of dismantling stereotypes through its supporting cast. A great example is Amane Himeno, a male character who enjoys cross-dressing as a women. While some might jump to conclusions about his identity or orientation, the anime clarifies that this is simply his form of self-expression.

The series uses Amane to highlight the pain of discrimination. When his girlfriend discovered his secret, she gave him an ultimatum: stop cross-dressing or she would leave. Amane’s choice was a powerful moment for the show. He realized that if he suppressed his true self to please her, he would lose himself. He chose separation over a relationship built on a lie, proving that if someone doesn't love the real you, they aren't the right partner.

Final Thoughts: Don't Lose Yourself

The reality is that every one of us is unique. While self-improvement is always a good thing, you should never have to sacrifice your personality or the hobbies you love just to fit in. With over 8 billion people on the planet, there is someone out there who will embrace you exactly as you are.

I thoroughly enjoyed this series, though I’ll admit I was a little frustrated that the romance didn't progress further. It’s clear Marin and Wakana have deep feelings for one another, and like many fans, I’m holding out hope for a third season to see that relationship finally blossom.
