Anime Review: Welcome to Japan, Ms. Elf! (2025)

This Isekai series was an incredibly enjoyable watch. I found myself bingeing all 12 episodes in one go.

The story follows Kazuhiro Kitase, an office worker with a very weird hobby: he sleeps. After a long day, he uses his dreams to escape into a fantasy world filled with monsters, magic, and adventure. Kazuhiro has the unique ability to use dreams like a video game at this will, using them to experience a life he could never have in reality. Since death in the dream world simply means waking up in his bed, there is no real world risk, just the thrill of exploration alongside his friend, an elf named Mariabelle.

However, the status quo is shattered during a routine exploration of some abandoned ruins. When they encounter a dragon guarding its eggs, Kazuhiro is killed in the dream. But instead of just waking up alone, he discovers something impossible. He was holding Mariabelle when they died and that caused her to be transported from the fantasy world directly into his bed in modern Japan.

From this point, the anime cleverly splits into two parallel narratives:

  • Life in Japan: Mariabelle navigates the human world, where technology replaces magic, the language is foreign, human food is leagues better than anything in her world and the environment is vastly different than what she’s used to.

  • Life in the Dream: The duo continues to explore the fantasy world every night, leading to high stakes fights and further adventures.

I highly recommend Welcome to Japan, Ms. Elf! if you are looking for a relaxing, lighthearted Isekai fantasy. Just be aware that the series features a fair amount of fan service, which is a staple of the genre, personally, I don’t mind it at all.
