Anime Review: Pseudo Harem (2024)

This romance anime has a very interesting premise: it’s a "harem" without being a harem, as weird as that sounds. The main characters—Rin Nanakura and Eiji Kitahama—are members of their school's drama club who slowly begin to develop feelings for each other.

When Eiji mentions having harem fantasies, Rin decides to fulfill his dream using her impressive acting skills. She begins performing as various character archetypes, simulating a harem experience (dating multiple girls at once) for Eiji. To their surprise, both of them start to love this eccentric game. It goes so far that Eiji eventually finds himself buying gifts not just for Rin, but for each of her distinct "personalities."

As their relationship deepens, Eiji begins to have second thoughts. He starts to wonder: shouldn't he just date the real Rin and stop interacting with these fake personas? However, by that point, the game has progressed so far that Rin feels those personalities have become a genuine part of who she is.

This is a truly unique take on the romance genre. The concept is refreshing, and the scenes where Rin rapidly switches between her different personalities are particularly enjoyable to watch. Also, their relationship progresses fast and jokes are enjoyable.

Psychologically speaking, this anime demonstrates how roleplay can create an unique spark in a relationship.
