Anime Review: Frieren: Beyond Journey's End Season 2 (2026)

When Season 1 became the #1 highest-rated anime of all time, the burning question was whether Season 2 could maintain those high standards. After watching it, the answer is a resounding yes. ‘Frieren’ is as amazing as ever. My only gripe is that it was only 10 episodes long, though, to be fair, even 20 episodes would feel like too few when dealing with an anime of this caliber.

Team Synergy and Trust

I want to highlight Episode 1, which perfectly showcases the teams growth. When Frieren and Fern lose their magic due to specialized stones in a cave, Frieren doesn't panic despite being defenseless in an unknown location. She sleeps peacefully because she trusts Stark to protect them.

That trust is rewarded, when a monster appears, Stark ensures they all reach safety. At this point, the team operates as a single unit, supporting and protecting one another instinctively.

Character Development and Romance

In Episode 4, we finally get the development many fans, myself included, have been waiting for: Stark and Fern go on a date. While it didn't culminate in a kiss or hand-holding, they genuinely enjoyed themselves and took a meaningful step closer to a real relationship.

Consequences and "Financial Slavery"

Episode 5 takes an unexpected turn when Frieren is arrested for an outstanding debt. Watching the legendary mage forced into labor to pay back what she owes was a shock! It served as a stark reminder that actions have consequences that eventually catch up to you.

It’s a great commentary on the dangers of high-interest "fast loans." Fortunately, Fern and Stark didn't have to break her out, the situation resolved itself without a jailbreak from her "financial slavery."

The Return of Old Friends

In Episodes 6–8, several mages from Season 1 return to team up with our heroes against formidable villains. Stark and Fern truly shine in these battles. The fights are brutal, but the team's healer proves indispensable.

It is incredible to see how much Fern has grown as a mage. Frieren remains a masterful mentor, knowing exactly when to step in and when to let her companions gain experience by fighting their own battles. Just as she let Stark face the dragon alone in Season 1 to overcome his fear, she allows Fern to combat demons here while watching closely to ensure their safety.

The Grand Finale

Despite an unexpected time jump between Episodes 9 and 10, the conclusion was fantastic. The dialogue between Fern and Stark in the finale was incredibly sweet.

Furthermore, the ending theme song is a masterpiece. I’ve listened to it on repeat! Even if you aren't interested in the show, you should at least give the soundtrack a listen.

Final Verdict

While I know a 10/10 rating for both seasons might not be "objective," it’s what my heart says. This show remains a gem in the world of anime. 😁

This show will be back in season 3 next year! 😉
