Anime Review: Wolf Children (2012)

Plot

This was a truly unique watch. The story follows Hana, a hardworking college student who falls in love with a mysterious man named Ookami. As they begin dating, it becomes clear that Ookami is hiding something, though he struggles to find the right moment to reveal it.

Eventually, Ookami shares his secret: he transforms into a wolf right before her eyes, explaining that he is a descendant of the extinct Japanese wolf. Although Hana is shocked, it doesn't change her feelings. She chooses to stay with him because she loves the person he is, regardless of his nature.

As their relationship blossoms, Hana gives birth to two children: Yuki, the energetic older sister, and Ame, her shy and fragile younger brother. Both are born half human and half wolf. Their happiness is short-lived, however, when tragedy strikes. Ookami dies in his wolf form under mysterious circumstances, shattering the family's stability.

Left alone, Hana must raise both children by herself. As a mother, she is willing to do anything to keep them safe, fed, and happy. We see her pushed to the point of exhaustion, constantly catching naps whenever she can. To make matters worse, Child Protective Services begins questioning her because she refuses to take the children to the doctor for checkups or vaccinations, fearing that professionals will discover they aren't fully human.

Seeking peace and privacy, the family moves to a dilapidated house in the countryside. This transition brings a new set of challenges: Hana must learn to grow her own food, a task she initially struggles with, while navigating the complexities of her children growing up, attending school, and ultimately choosing very different paths in life.

Themes and Lessons

First and foremost, this movie is an incredible depiction of a mother’s instinct. Hana is ready to sacrifice everything for the benefit of her children, a sentiment many parents will find deeply relatable.

Additionally, the film beautifully displays the difficulties parents face as their children grow up and choose their own paths. While parents often want to protect their children from mistakes or steer them away from paths they don't agree with, the story reminds us that we must eventually respect their autonomy. It is only by "loosening the chains" of parental control that we truly allow them to grow.

Final Thoughts

With its stunning animation and unique, moving story, “Wolf Children” is a very enjoyable watch. I’m giving it an 8/10.
