Anime Review: Into the Forest of Fireflies' Light (2011) Movie
This was a very short anime movie (only 45 minutes long), but a very interesting watch.
The Plot
The story follows six-year-old Hotaru Takegawa, who gets lost in a forest inhabited by spirits. She is rescued by Gin, a forest spirit who wears a mysterious mask. They quickly become friends, and Hotaru begins visiting him every day. While Gin enjoys her company, he has one strict rule: she must never touch him. Because of a curse, a contact with a human will cause him to disappear forever.
As summer ends, Hotaru promises to return the following year. She keeps this promise, spending every subsequent summer with him in the forest. We watch as she grows from a very young girl into a high school student, while Gin remains virtually unchanged. Over time, their bond deepens, offering a fascinating glimpse into the spirit world. However, I’ll stop here to avoid spoiling this brief but moving story. But we end up finding the truth about who Gin is, as story progresses.
What Can We Learn From This Anime
First, it highlights the importance of physical touch in our relationships, whether they are platonic or romantic. Gin and Hotaru long to embrace, but they are held back by the threat of his disappearance. They resort to holding opposite ends of a stick to simulate holding hands, but it never quite fulfills their desire for connection. It reminds us that physical intimacy is a privilege, and its absence creates a longing for it.
Second, the film explores the nature of devotion. Hotaru spends every year waiting for summer just to return to the forest. Their relationship is defined by the changing seasons and the long stretches of time spent apart. This illustrates a selfless kind of love—the willingness to wait for someone even when the circumstances are fragile and the time shared is limited.
My Thoughts About This Anime
I gave it a 7/10. The short runtime is actually a benefit rather than a drawback, it takes you on a brief, focused adventure through a spirit-filled forest that is easy to enjoy. I definitely suggest giving it a try.
