Things That Are Actually Ableism (But People Don't Always Recognize)

  • Expecting disabled people to perform at the same level every day.

  • Assuming independence means someone doesn't need accommodations.

  • Believing mobility aids are only for people who "can't walk."

  • Thinking someone is "too young" to be disabled.

  • Assuming invisible disabilities are less serious because you can't see them.

  • Treating disability as something that needs to be overcome rather than accommodated.

  • Calling someone "lazy" when they're managing symptoms you can't see.

  • Assuming working part-time means someone could work full-time if they "really wanted to."

  • Believing rest is a luxury instead of a medical necessity.

  • Expecting disabled people to constantly explain or prove their disability.

  • Saying "But you don't look sick."

  • Believing disability is all-or-nothing instead of existing on a spectrum.
