As an addendum to Austin’s post it’s interesting to observe how much die space Intel has allocated to the NPU on Lunar Lake: almost as much as to performance cores.
One can see one possible sequence of events that might have led to the hype. MS mandates 40TOPs NPU, Intel builds to this spec leading to large die space allocation for NPU, NPU then becomes standout feature of this generation of SoCs and so the focus of the marketing, the marketing hype then leaks into other decision making.
As Austin says the Centrino analogy is misplaced but in fairness Intel isn’t alone in overhyping AI features. 🍎
