“The issue with inputs is that the music and art that forms the bedrock of a lot of my passion comes from cracked software, misused hardware, toys and heresay, illegal samples, or electronic recreations of real instruments, as dim and coldhearted as a robot’s thumb. It is the artist that organizes this immoral or amoral detritus into human shape. Many of the most dynamic images in my memories come from the tip of an odious and brutal aerosol can. Artists didn’t create these objects and systems, but they dignify our lives in spite of them, transfigure the banality and disgust of our age into something worth living for.”
So proud that our predictions episode played some small role in this really thoughtful meditation on Bandcamp’s AI ban and whether kneejerk luddism villainizing all artists who experiment with these models displaces the anger folks feel at AI companies onto the people who can best help us make sense of this moment.
