they illustrate how older ways of talking about the value of the humanities are being replaced by what I think of as the managerial humanities. By this, I mean a particularly coercive form of humanities discourse that can be used for organisational transformation purposes within humanities institutions themselves. Like management theory, the function of the managerial humanities is to equip the enterprise of “reprioritisation” with the glamour of novelty and normative compulsion. This, the managerial humanities suggests, is what we ought to be doing right now in response to the grave challenges of our moment. To question “the new priorities” is to reveal oneself as not only “change-resistant,” but likely a morally suspect individual as well.
