5 steps to start your career in fashion data analytics

From someone who actually works as one

Everyone asks me the same thing: where do I even start?

Here’s the honest answer:

1. Understand the business before the data. Learn how fashion works — the buying calendar, the sell-through, the margin. The data makes sense when the business makes sense.

2. Start with Google Trends. It’s free and it will teach you how to ask better questions. Pick a brand you love and just start looking.

3. Learn Excel properly. Not formulas, but how to structure data, how to clean it, how to build something someone else can use.

4. Tell stories with your findings. Nobody wants a spreadsheet. They want to know what it means and what to do about it.

5. Post your work publicly. The people who built careers fastest were the ones who showed their thinking out loud. That’s how I started DFB.
