You can, and should, be able to make a living as a writer or director. It's imperative. It takes too much time and energy just do it for passion, for a hobby, for a credit. That being said, you have to do things for free to get started. To get opportunities. Find the balance.

There’s a lot of conflicting advice out there about building a writing-based business (or just making money writing).
Creators with years and years of experience will directly contradict each other. I see it every day.
I think one thing always holds true though, and it’s this: those who’re willing to keep doing the boring, repetitive, unglamorous work behind the scenes are usually the ones who actually reach their goals.
Because it’s those simple, everyday tasks, performed quietly in the background while everyone else is screaming for attention, that move us from A to B.
So if that’s what you’ve been doing, please keep going.
