The Long Goodbye…about my grandma…Nanny Sis…who built community the way other people breathe. Today’s piece is about how we’ve watched dementia steal her slowly…about my own parents, who STILL take care of everyone around them… they've never had a season to just be free.

And it's about my generation, all of us in our late thirties and forties, raising our kids…figuring out our own lives…saying goodbye to our grandparents…and facing the reality of saying goodbye to our very own parents at the same time that we still very much need them to be…our parents…and feeling guilty for admitting that feeling.

I wrote this for anyone who is watching someone they love disappear behind their own forgetting…and for anyone who still has time to make the call before the showing up becomes urgent.
