Sorry but the use of “MFA” on this app is getting a bit goofy. MFAs are just graduate arts programs for writers and these days have classes on every genre and subgenre including second world fantasy. Basic craft concepts like “free indirect” speech or a preference for showing over telling are in no way restricted to MFA programs, 21st century American realism (I guess that’s what is meant as a target?), or any type of fiction at all. These are common techniques in like any hardboiled detective book or cyberpunk novel too. Conversely, they are not required constraints of MFAs, literary realism, or anything else.
There is no sense in which anyone can non-meretriciously claim that MFAs aren’t their own form of genre fiction. And in practice, everyone who dishonestly protests this ends up confirming it in their next utterance, as soon as they bring up narrators “disappearing into” characters, any variant of “free indirect style,” any intimation tha…
