For better or worse, I expect GenAI to revive the distinction between high/innovative/artistic and low/formulaic/mere entertainment that the poptimists largely defeated in recent decades. Maybe we’ll call it art vs. slop this time. The idea that it’s “all just music” or “all just books” and you can’t make qualitative distinctions will seem less appealing when certain formulaic work can be automated with a button click.
