To place music in the perspective of deep time:

Live music is at least 50,000-60,000 years old (Divje Babe flute)

Notated music is at least 3400 years old (Hurrian Hymn to Nikkal)

Recorded music is only 160 years old (Au Clair de la Lune). Its history is almost 400 times shorter than live music and 20 times shorter than notated music.

This is not to say the fate of recorded music doesn’t matter - it does - but it’s sobering to remember that music would continue even if every microphone, speaker, and computer disappeared tomorrow.
