Make money doing the work you believe in

During my time in Asia, I worked with an English man from the Midlands I speak about at length in Beyond Slides.

He is surely the funniest boss I ever had in my career, but he was funny AND educational at the same time.

One day, I deserved some feedback… but he knew better. That was not the time to give it to me because emotions were running high.

“When the pupil is ready to learn, the master shall appear” - that's the only thing he told me.

He was so right!

When someone is anxious, defensive, or angry, your words don't land. They bounce back to you.

Address the tension first. Validate their experience (doesn’t mean you agree). Take interest in their work.

Until people feel heard, they aren’t listening or processing new information.

Connection before content.
