“2025 Te Ao Māori: Year of Losses and the Infrastructure of Rollback” - 30 December 2025
A Year When Leadership Fell, Rights Fell, and a Blueprint for Future Erasure Was Locked In
The Crown's Coordinated Assault on Te Tiriti in 2025
2025 didn't just happen to Māoridom. It was architected.
While the nation fought the visible battle (Treaty Principles Bill—defeated 112-11), the Crown deployed four legislative strikes designed to erase Te Tiriti from education, child welfare, coastal rights, and all future lawmaking.
Timing? Strategic. The attacks came while four towering Māori leaders lay in the ground: Turia, Tāwhiwhirangi, Kemp, Te Heuheu.
Infrastructure? Deliberately designed. The Regulatory Standards Act isn't about the Treaty directly—it's about making it impossible for future governments to protect Māori rights without proving they impose no costs on the already-privileged.
Resistance? Already forming. 1500+ schools defied the law. Iwi filed at the Waitangi Tribunal. 3800 indigenous educators gathered to chart a different path.
This was the year they tried to lock us in.
This is the year we're choosing to build our way out.
