Counseling vs Coaching: what’s the difference and which is right for me?

Both coaching and counseling support growth, healing, and change. They are powerful tools, but they are not the same, and choosing the right one matters.

Here’s a simple breakdown to help you decide.

COACHING

The International Coaching Federation (ICF) defines coaching as partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential. It is a confidential, future-focused partnership aimed at unlocking potential, rather than fixing problems, through empowerment.

Coaching is an unregulated industry and there is no required education or certification that a person has to get to call themselves a coach BUT a good coach has had training and either has a certification or is working on one.  The ICF is the gold standard for coaching credentials (which is why I'm working on mine)!  However the American Christian Counseling Association certifies coaches as do many other smaller organizations and programs.

Coaching may be a good fit if you are:

  • - Feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure of your next step

  1. - Seeking a transformation in a specific area such as boundaries, confidence, leadership, burnout, or purpose

  2. - You are high-functioning but craving clarity, accountability, and mindset shifts

  3. - Ready to take action but want guidance and structure

  4. - Looking to integrate values, faith, and goals into daily life

Coaching is action-oriented and future focused.  In other words, you coach should not be digging into your childhood trauma.  A coach looks at the present and centers ongoals, growth, and personal or professional development.

A coach cannot diagnose, treat mental illness or bill your insurance.

Coaching often includes accountability, strategy, and mindset work and can be done one to one or in groups.

COUNSELING

The American Counseling Association defines counseling as "a professional relationship that empowers diverse individuals, families and groups to accomplish mental health, wellness, education and career goals."  Mental health counseling is a professional and confidential servie where you work with a licensed professional that will help you manage emotional, psychological, and behavioral issues. It involves diagnosing mental health conditions, providing evidence-based treatments (e.g., CBT, EMDR), and developing coping strategies for challenges like anxiety, depression, or addiction.

Counselors have a few different titles and many letters after their names.  Those letters are hard earned!  Every therapist has to have a master's degree which takes about 3 years after they finish their 4 year bachelor's degree. Then they have to work for 2 years under a licensed clinician before they are allowed to practice independently.  In addition, many therapists go on to get certifications in speciality therapies such as EMDR, Internal Family Systems, or Somatic Experiencing.

Masters level therapists include master level social workers, mental health counselors and marriage & family therapists. There are also psychologists that have doctorates, which is earned after the masters degree.

Counseling may be a good fit if you are:

  • - Struggling with challenges like anxiety, depression, trauma, harmful behaviors

  • - Experiencing symptoms that impact daily functioning or relationships

  • - Processing past wounds, attachment patterns, or life transitions

  • - You have or suspect you have a significant mental illness that requires clinical support.

  • - Needing a safe space for emotional regulation, healing, and stabilization

Many counselors accept insurace and can work with you one to one or in a group. They also offer family and couples counsleing. Unlike coaching that stays focused on the present to help you build your future, counseling often focuses on the past so you can live fully in the present.

I’ll be back to address common questions that come up around this topic.
