MSU has reached a resolution agreement with the U.S. Department of Education, officially ending its partnership with The Ph.D. Project. The DOE alleges the organization failed to comply with the Civil Rights Act of 1964 due to race-based participation criteria.

MSU is one of 31 colleges nationwide that have cut ties or agreed to do so. These schools will also review outside partnerships to ensure compliance with federal civil rights law.

Education Secretary Linda McMahon called the shift the “Trump effect in action,” saying institutions are recommitting to merit-based opportunity and equal treatment under the law.

Fourteen other universities have not yet entered agreements.
