Many things, but one of the most important has to do with having strong, protective emotional boundaries.
Here’s something I learned recently from a book I’m reading.
Emotional boundaries require safety, respect, and freedom to be oneself.
Anything that:
Shames
Silences
Controls
Dismisses
Overpowers
Invalidates
…teaches a person to abandon themselves in order to survive.
