I have never heard this shape of pasta being referred as “orzo” in Italy by any Italian.

If at all, it’s called “risoni”. At least in the north east. I head it being called “orzo” only by English speaking foreigners, curiously (in Portugal they also call it Risoni, and I imagine wherever Lidl gets as they have it in stock from time to time).

How odd.

There where I come from, “orzo” is barley, and is a staple everyday food (pasta, not so much). And “orzet” is a glorious dish coming straight from the Iron Age.

Orzo is a shapeshifting enigma of the pasta world that walks a fine line between deception and delight. One glance might have you fooled - "Surely," you think, "this is rice." But no: this is pasta masquerading as a grain, an imposter in a starch masquerade ball, and what an elegant act it portrays.
