Harry Milton saved George Orwell's life in Spain in 1937. Orwell died in January 1950, aged 46, of tuberculosis. Researchers now believe he most likely contracted the disease in the Barcelona hospital where he was treated for the gunshot wound — the hygiene standards were poor and infection rates were high. The bullet missed his carotid artery by millimeters. The hospital stay that followed it appears to have killed him thirteen years later. Milton stopped the bleeding. Spain provided everything else. I wrote about Milton, his son, and what their story means now, in this week's More.
