On Monday evening in Oslo, someone introduced me to an American named David Milton. His father is "the American" in George Orwell's Homage to Catalonia — the man standing next to Orwell when a sniper shot him through the throat in Spain in 1937, the man who stepped forward and stopped the bleeding. Harry Milton saw fascism coming in 1936, went to Spain to fight it, was imprisoned by Soviet forces in Barcelona, freed by an American telegram campaign, deployed to Greenland, landed in Normandy, and fought at the Battle of the Bulge. His son is alive. He was at a Liberation Day commemoration in a Norwegian cemetery. I was standing next to him. Read the story in More.
