🎶 Pietro Mascagni was twenty-six, broke, and almost out of time when he submitted his opera to a competition in 1888. He nearly withdrew before the deadline. His wife persuaded him to finish it.
Two years later, on May 17, 1890, Cavalleria Rusticana had its premiere in Rome. The audience carried Mascagni out of the theatre on their shoulders.
