Some dance records feel like they must have been #1s. But when you look back at the charts, you discover they never quite got there.

A good example is Sign o’ the Times by Prince.

On this day in 1987 it entered the Billboard Dance chart, eventually climbing to #2, where it stayed for three consecutive weeks.

And it was blocked by quite a line-up:

Jody Watley, Club Nouveau and… Kraftwerk.
