This past weekend my husband and I went to Las Vegas for my 30th birthday. We were there four days.
A lot of people get so caught up in making everything so black and white that if it can’t be perfect, they give up completely and fall off the wagon.
It doesn’t have to be that way.
We worked out 3 out of the 4 days we were there. The fourth day was my normal rest day anyway. The hotel gym didn’t have my usual equipment, and I didn’t stress about that. My workouts weren’t quite as long or as robust as they normally are, and I didn’t stress about that either. My philosophy is that we moved every day. I challenged my muscles and got my heart rate up, and that’s what counts.
I also didn’t stress about food. I definitely ate more calories than I normally would. But I made sure to get a solid amount of protein in at most meals. There was one meal where I didn’t, and I didn’t think twice about it.
We walked a ton. We got fancy coffees. I had two drinks one night and a single drink another. Everything was done in moderation.
I didn’t fall off the wagon. And now that I’m home, I don’t feel like I need to “work anything off.”
I stayed consistent enough to keep moving forward, but I didn’t miss out or give up on anything either.
I travel a lot, and this is the approach that works best for me, especially on vacations. Not frequent business trips, but the trips that are actually meant to be enjoyed.
Stay active. Lift or move when you can. Get protein in where it makes sense. Enjoy the food, the drinks, and the experience, but don't stress about adhering to your exact normal habits.
The bottom line to remember is that consistency beats perfection, every time.
