Aminus3 Photography discover the canals of Xochimilco in Mexico City. The name Xochimilco comes from the Nahuatl language and means "land of flowers." Passengers board trajineras (the brightly painted boats) and ride through the canals (there’s approximately 170 km of canals here) among the chinampas (pre-Hispanic, human-made agricultural islands often referred to as “floating gardens” - this same farming method helped feed the ancient Aztec capital city Tenochtitlan). Today, the canals are full of mariachi bands, people selling grilled corn and flower crowns, and visitors (largely tourists) dancing to loud music and drinking.
