This essay resonated with my own experiences as a teacher. Our challenge in the age of AI is not simply to help students see the value in learning, but also to help them see that they, too, have value. They are unique individuals, not just ones and zeros interchangeable with a machine. Their lives have meaning. AI poses many educational challenges, but I fear an even greater one is that it encourages nihilism.

There’s a much deeper wound here that we’re only now beginning to see. When a machine can now mimic the work of a human being, many of us, especially students, must be asking what the point is anymore. That’s a much more dangerous and slippery problem than students submitting AI-generated work.
