When a tool is beautiful (rather than just useful), it has the power to transform both the task and the person using it.

This idea throughout history:

• 3000 BC Egyptians believed beautiful tools and vessels = Ma’at (cosmic order)

• 400 BC: “techne” - Plato theorized that beautiful objects reflect truth and order

• 1900s Germany: Kant and Schiller claimed they make us more balanced, ethical humans

• 1960 France: Bachelard suggested that they transform our psyche
