Bastani et al. (2025) found that students with unrestricted access to AI scored 17% lower on a math test. Worse still, they rated their own understanding as high. The issue: AI had made them feel as if they had learned the material.

But the group with structured access to AI showed no deficit at all.

The problem isn’t AI. The problem is unstructured use of AI.
