According to research from the Manhattan Institute, data centres account for a mere 0.2% of daily water consumption in the US—and that footprint is dropping rapidly.
The shift comes down to a major hardware transition: 45-degree liquid cooling systems. By deploying these setups in optimal climates, AI factories can slash their water usage from 2.6 million gallons per megawatt per year down to basically zero.
Even better, the engineering is turning a waste product into an asset. The intense heat generated by these clusters can now be captured and redirected back to local communities as a functional energy source.
The environmental pushback against heavy compute is officially hitting a wall of rapid engineering efficiency.
