Acemoglu and Robinson’s Why Nations Fail rests on their early quantitative work, which is more empirically shaky than you might think.

But newer and better research keeps finding that institutions do matter. Additionally, a recent survey of hundreds of econ experts shows strong agreement that institutions are important for development.
