The X comment Claire Lehmann posted the other day is a fairly common thought some people have when it comes to evaluating social media harms and the evidence base on which claims of harm are made.
But it’s also very misguided. It’s not true that we only have correlational evidence on smoking harms. And even just looking at the correlational evidence on smoking, there’s no comparison in terms of quality, effect size, and consistency between it and what we have on social media harms.
