I don’t actually mind this point. It’s stronger than I like to speak but if you truly hate Mexicans then maybe don’t walk into a restaurant run by them or at least with their imagery all over.
The problem is the, “you’re full of hate” smear gets thrown around to discredit people with nuanced, reasonable stances. It’s the classic ad hominem - if you hate immigrants then anything you say about them is rotten fruit from your hate tree and I can dismiss it.
I sat and thought for about half a minute and I can’t think of one person I’ve met who hates immigrants. Probably because that’s a cartoonishly stupid world view that precludes you from being friends with half the people you meet in most US cities.
What I hear people “hating” includes:
Too much immigration too fast
Unvetted immigration
Illegal immigration
Crime committed by immigrants, particularly illegal immigrants
Jobs lost to immigrants
Being lectured about our country’s failings by a smug prick like Trevor Noah
I have beefs with all of those points except 1, 2, and 6. They’re not bigoted or unfounded, but I think they miss a lot unless you add nuance.
#6 is huge though. I lived in a foreign country and you know what they didn’t like? Foreigners telling them the ways their country sucked. WHO LIKES THAT? It doesn’t even have to be a different country. Try going from California to Texas, or vice versa, and telling the locals why your home state kicks ass compared to this dump.
