Today’s good thing: UNEXPECTED DISCOVERIES!

One of the best things about this summer of medical treatment has been spending extended time with my granddaughters, age 3 and almost 5. In a loving home supplied with materials and few limits on their creativity, these girls continually find new ways to express themselves.

Yesterday they discovered crushing up and pounding sidewalk chalks that had become boring.

All of a sudden, much enthusiastic smashing occurred, and then gathering different powders and putting them into a discarded plastic Easter egg half, adding water, and creating a “rainbow blend” to use tomorrow when it dried in its mold.

As we were getting ready to go into the house for dinner, Liya turned back. “Look, Nani!” She declared. “We made art!”

And so they had.

Children haven’t yet learned the “rules” that constrain the rest of us, even the unspoken ones that guide the use of #art materials. There’s something so healing in play, in being in the moment, in following an impulse and seeing where it goes.

Some of the greatest discoveries in human history have been made that way.

How about you? Made any surprise discoveries in your life lately?
