Make money doing the work you believe in
I'm 52 and I calculated how many able-bodied years I have left.
The answer is about 14.
Start with the average American lifespan, 78.6. Subtract my age. Then subtract 12.4 years, the stretch of deteriorating health that Americans experience toward the end of the line. The US has the largest gap between how long we live and how long we live healthy of any country studied.
This links up with some of the advice by Scott Galloway and others on when we should all be hustling at work. The advice is to grind wildly in your 20s, 30s, 40s, and 50s, and then attempt to deduct the benefits in your....60s???
But earning years and able-bodied years cannot be separated. They fight for priority every day. Which is why I am writing a book on purpose hat comes out next year.
You don't know which hike is your last tough one. Which concert is the last one you will enjoy standing up for 3 hours (hopefully its not 3 hours waiting for Guns N Roses circa 2026 to get on stage).
So buy back a few hours. Pay a neighborhood kid next door to mow the lawn. Take the toll road if it hands you back 35 minutes. Then spend that time before work finds it and eats it.
What would you do with a reclaimed two hours during a supposed workday?
