Trump and gang think they are flexing American power and compelling the rest of the world to “respect” us (whatever that is actually supposed to mean). But their document is a recipe for national decline; if anyone were to pick a country likely to inaugurate its own slide into glaring weakness, the U.S. would not be at the top of the list. Yet the document’s delusions of grandeur are hard to stomach. Among other inanities, it claims for the United States “inherent greatness and decency.”  We are no more inherently great or decent, however, than we are innately ignorant, greedy, cynical, or cruel, despite the fact that ignorance, greed, cynicism, and cruelty are hallmarks of this Administration’s domestic and foreign policies.
