This morning’s Issue 359 of The Daily Chronicle features a deep dive into the career of a wrestler that is all but forgotten today. Bearcat Brown was just as important a wrestler to Birmingham, Alabama as Sputnik Monroe is to Memphis, Tennessee. I dive into the first integrated tag team he was part of, their impact in Birmingham at one of the most racially-intense times in US History as well as a look at his move set and the psychology of it. Unlike modern wrestlers who catalog multiple named headbutt variations (diving, top-rope, running bulldog-style, etc.), Brown’s version was straightforward, brutal, and highly effective within the hard-hitting NWA Mid-America and Memphis style of the late 1960s–1970s. There were no flashy setups or aerial twists. Instead, the “variations” came from context, timing, setup, and psychology—how and when he deployed the move to maximum crowd-popping effect.
