It was the church growth movement from the USA that influenced a swathe of Baby boomer Evangelical Anglican Church to dumb down the Anglican liturgy and practice and aggrandise the Bible part of the service and in particular preaching and the preacher. The problem is that it created a false dichotomy between Anglican and Christian; liturgy and word, and even word and sacrament; where we aim to make our “gatherings” as appealing, as palatable and as ‘normal’ as possible in order to win the outsider.
