Make money doing the work you believe in

Interesting and useful stuff, I will be reading more. I’m guessing you must be aware of many of the same people I’ve been interested to read over the years. Lucy Johnstone + and the power threat meaning framework, David Smail, Paul Maloney, William Epstein etc? I think I’m just more doubtful as to the curative effects of any talk therapy or psychiatries ignorant, dangerous fiddling.

For those unfamiliar but curious try these:

William Epstein

The Illusion of Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy as Religion: the Civil Divine in America

Psychotherapy and the Social Clinic In the United States, Soothing Fictions.

David Smails books - David was a clinical Psychologist who worked for years as a therapist in the NHS in the 1970/80’s and he wrote several excellent books and some can be found here:

Paul Maloney’s book The Therapy Industry is good and he can be found here

The statement from the site above seems very close to your thinking

‘We are a group of clinical, counselling and academic psychologists who believe that psychology—particularly but not only clinical psychology—has served ideologically to detach people from the world we live in, to make us individually responsible for our own misery and to discourage us from trying to change the world rather than just ‘understanding’ our selves. What are too often seen as private predicaments are in fact best understood as arising out of the public structures of society’
