Glimpses of Old Dhaka

In 1610, the Mughals then moved the capital of Bengal to Dhaka.

Once regarded as one of the prettiest cities in the subcontinent, rampant urbanisation has all but destroyed the city's historic fabric.

Little remains of Mughal Dhaka today.

But if you know where to look, you can still get glimpses.

Dhaka Fort and the Dhakeshwari mandir are of course the most famous spots.

But my favourite spot is the Shia Imambara, which has remarkable similarities to the architecture of Murshidabad in India.

The other is the Armenian church, the interior of which has preserved the later Mughal church style seen in Sardhana and Le Martinier.

Serene spots in what is otherwise a rather blade-runner style cityscape.
