News from Syria had me reflecting on a project I worked on for several years: American ISIS, an eight-episode podcast series for Audible about Russell Dennison. Dennison, an American convert to Islam, traveled to Syria to fight — first for Nusra Front and later for ISIS. I consider American ISIS a historical record: the story of the Syrian Civil War and the rise of ISIS, told through the perspective of an American who was there.
